250 seeds. 50 Days. Spinacia oleracea. Annual.
Spinach 'Viroflay' has dark green, semi-savoyed leaves that can reach up to 10 inches long. This pre-1860s French heirloom is also known as Monstrue de Viroflay. It is the largest spinach we sell. Thin vigorusly if large plants are desired.
In the spring of 2023, I grew three spinach varieties: Viroflay, Giant Noble and Bloomsdale Long Standing. I was most impressed by the size of the Viroflay leaves compared to Giant Noble and Bloomsdale Long Standing. Out of the three spinach varieties, Viroflay bolted first closely followed by Bloomsdale Long Standing. Even though Viroflay bolted first, it is still a strong contender because the leaves grew fast and large.
Sowing Spinach Seeds:
Sow seeds outdoors 1/4 inch deep and 2 inches appart in early spring as soon as the soil thaws. Or sow spinach seeds in late summer. Thin the seedlings to 8 inches apart. Space rows 16 inches apart. Spinach seeds are dormate in temperatures above 80 degrees fahrenheit. Full sun to part shade.
