Beet 'Crapaudine' has very dark burgundy carrot-shaped roots with rough, bark-like skin and red interior. The flavor is deep and earthy with a texture that is slightly more fibrous than smooth beets such as Crosby's Egyptian. The tough skin of Crapaudine is easily removed after steaming. This dinosaur-looking beet is thought to be closer to what beets used to be like before all the breeding efforts made the modern beet smoothed skinned. This old heirloom variety is also called Oak Bark Beet.
See this video for the history of behind this beet.
