Tomato 'Orange Icicle'

25 seeds. 80 days. Solanum lycopersicum. Indeterminate.

Tomato 'Orange Icicle' is an excellent paste variety with 2.4 oz fruits and golden skin. It has a mild fruity flavor with some tang and a meaty texture. The bullet shape of this paste tomato makes cutting off the stem end a breeze while processing for canning and making sauce. And there will be a large amount of tomatoes to process as Orange Icicle is very productive. On top of that, the seed cavity is easy to clean. If you cut it lengthwise, you can create little tomato boats to serve as hors d'oeuvres. Orange Icicle is from Ukraine and introduced by Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Open-pollinated.

Orange Icicle holds up very well when picked green before the first frost and then ripened indoors. We had Orange Icicle tomatoes for at least 6 weeks after the first frost without any special care besides a dark, dry basement.

Orange Icicle is pictured here with Lettuce Leaf Basil and a grasshopper that decided to jump into my vegetable photo shoot.

Sowing Tomato Seeds:

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date, 1/8 inch deep. Transplant outside 2 weeks after the last frost date. Plant tomatoes deep in the soil for a better root structure. Space 3 feet apart. Full sun.
