Tomato 'Cherokee Purple'

25 seeds. 85 days. Solanum lycopersicum. Indeterminate.

Cherokee Purple is a very popular varieity of black tomato for its flavor. It grows large dusky purple tomatoes that weigh 12 ounces. This pre-1890s Native American heirloom is not an early tomato, but worth growing for its smoky sweet flavor.

We found that it was most productive at the end of the season when some of the early varieties of large tomatoes, such as 'Pink Pioneer' were slowing down.

Sowing Tomato Seeds:

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date, 1/8 inch deep. Transplant outside 2 weeks after the last frost date. Plant tomatoes deep in the soil for a better root structure. Space 3 feet apart. Full sun.
