Tomato 'Thorburn's Terra-Cotta'

25 seeds. 75 days. Solanum lycopersicum. Semi-determinate.

Tomato 'Thorburn's Terra-Cotta' has an intriguing burnt orange skin and multi-colored interior of orange and pink with a green seed gel. The flavor is tart, but somewhat flat. However, its tartness will liven up any tomato sauce or salsa that needs a little zing. Its high acidity may be good for canning. The tough skin is best peeled off by blanching before adding to recipes. The medium to large slicer-type fruits are juicy.

The semi-determinate plants put on a flush of fruits in mid-season and then tapper off as soon as it gets chilly. I would recommend this tomato with those who live in southern climates as the plants seem more sensitive to cool temperatures than the other varieties I have grown. James Thorburn of New York introduced Thorburn's Terra-Cotta in 1893. Fruits tend to crack.

Sowing Tomato Seeds:

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date, 1/8 inch deep. Transplant outside 2 weeks after the last frost date. Plant tomatoes deep in the soil for a better root structure. Space 3 feet apart. Full sun.
