Tomatillo 'Grande Rio Verde'

50 seeds. 85 days. Physalis ixocarpa. Tender perennial.

Tomatillo 'Grande Rio Verde' has large, green fruits that weigh about 3 ounces. When the fruit is close to being ripe it will fill out the husk, but by the time the husk dries out it will be overripe and loose its bright lemon flavor. The flavor is sweet with a sharp citrus taste. When the fruit gets too ripe the flavor mellows and looses its bright taste. This Mexican heirloom is a real keeper for anyone looking to make roasted salsa verde. I prefer these tomatillo cooked instead of raw.

The plants of tomatillo Grande Rio Verde are tall, nearing 4 feet by the end of the season. The open habit of the plants makes finding the fruit easy. This tomatillo matures later than the other varieties, but once it starts producing it is very productive.

Height 3-4 feet.
