Melon 'Honey Rock' fruits are juicy and sweet. In our taste tests some people thought it tasted similar to the green Honey Dew melon, which makes sense since Honey Dew is part of it's ancestry. The fruits weigh 1 to 2 pounds and the texture is on the softer side. The melon halves are a good size for small fruit bowls. It is quite productive late in the season. Honey Rock was introduced in 1925 by Watt Richardson, and it was an All-American Selections winner in 1933. Resistant to fusarium wilt. Also known as Sugar Rock.
We noticed the bugs liked to make holes in our fruits just as they ripened. Try growing these small melons on a trellis to avoid the bugs.
Sowing Melon Seeds:
Sow seeds outdoor after the last frost date, 1/2 inch deep. Sow in hill spaced 6 feet apart and thin to 3 plants per hill. Alternatively, sow in rows spaced two feet apart. Full sun.
