Spearmint has bright green leaves and small spikes of purple flowers in mid-summer. For best flavor harvest Spearmint in the morning and before it flowers. I like to add some fresh mint to a glass of water topped with ice. The ice keeps the mint leaves from floating and the mint makes the water refreshing, especially after gardening in the hot sun.
 
We grow our spearmint in a pot to keep it from spending everywhere. It spreads by stolons, and it also self sows. So cut your mint when it is flowering to keep it contained. Deer resistant.

Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date. Or sow outdoors in spring. Barely cover the seeds. Full sun to part shade.
