Pepper 'Mulato Isleno'

30 seeds. 90 days. Capsicum annuum. Tender perennial.

Pepper 'Mulato Isleno' has 4-inch long green to chocolate fruits. This Mexican heirloom tastes sweet followed by mild heat. Its sweetness and heat increases as the pepper ripens. Fully ripe peppers are often dried to use in mole and hot sauce. Mulato Isleno has a heat level of 2,500 to 3,000 Scoville Heat Units, which is milder than jalapeños.

In our garden Mulato Isleno took a long time to mature and we were barely able to get ripe peppers before Fall frost, but we enjoyed many of the still green peppers roasted in the oven and filled with cream cheese and turkey. We saved our ripest peppers to dry. I can't wait to try them in winter chili! Mulato Isleno is often compared to the Ploblano pepper, but I found that it is superior in flavor and in disease resistance in our area. Poblanos tend to get sun scaled or blossom end rot in Northern Utah, but I did not have this problem with Mulato Isleno.

Sowing Peppers Seeds:
