If I only grew one winter squash a year it would be 'Violina Rugosa Butternut.' It is my top pick for best textured and taste in squash. The texture reminds me of a sweet potato and it isn't stringy like some squashes. Violina Rugosa Butternut is drier than most squashes, so you rarely have to worry about draining it before adding to a recipe. It is sweet right out of the oven with with just a pat of butter. I cannot rave enough about how good tasting it is.
Violina Rugosa Butternut stores well for about 5 months in cool storage.
Sowing Squash Seeds:

This is my favorite butternut squash. I like the dry flesh because you don't end up with too much water in your recipe. You can always add more water, but you can't take it out :) The flavor is remarkably sweet and rich. I will be growing Violina Rugosa from now on instead of the common butternut squash.
