Sunflower 'Taiyo' has large, yellow flowers with chocolate interiors. The blooms can be up to 10 inches across. This Japanese heirloom is non-branching. It is a great cut-flower, but it is also wonderful to have in the garden for the bees. In Japanese, 'taiyo' means 'sun.'
 
Taiyo is bee magnet! In our garden, the bees were around the sunflowers all day long. There were not only honey bees but also wild bees collecting pollen on the large blooms.
 
The seeds can be roasted and eaten but are smaller than the traditional edible sunflower seeds. See Sunflower Mammoth Grey Stripe for larger edible sunflower seeds.
